Just got my electronic version of "Cycle World" magazine - the August 2009 issue - which has their "Ten Best Bikes of 2009"...

And guess what bike is one of those "Ten Best"?

That's right, boys and girls - Harley-Davidson's XR1200

Picked as 2009's "Best Standard" is quite an honor considering the competition for that category, and the bikes didn't make the "Ten Best" list at all in other categories, like Yamaha's new YZF-R1...

Nice to know everybody here picked a winner! ;) :D ;)

Ha, Dallara, you are too quick for me....I just opened up my "Zinio" 'cause I got the email notice of the new issue in my library.....and I wanted to check to see if they published the letter I wrote to them last month....I saw the XR as a TOP TEN bike, jumped on the forum to post it, and damned if you hadn't already done it!

But I think it's a very cool thing....the people on Juneau Avenue have got to feel pretty good about this....of course, there are plenty of XR's gathering dust in dealer showrooms right now........

It's definitely one of the 3 best in my garage.
Awesome, could use the justification. Can't tell ya how many times I've heard, "you bought Har-llleeeeeyy?"
Great to be in the top ten for sure. The side articles about the Stortz bike and the other XR750 racer/roadbike featured were good reading as well. I had always lusted for the bikes Stortz made for years so when the XR came out I was an automatic prospect. The good news for me was with a few mods it would fit me perfect and be better than I expected. Happy, happy, Joy, joy! Later,

I get that same reaction a lot. You bought a what???? I have to explain this isn't a typical Harley. But, the crotch rocket guys know exactly what it is and seem to really like it.
Well deserved! I'm riding the other bikes in garage less and less. After 40+ years of riding everything from Hondas to Urals, HD brought out a "standard" that I really enjoy.
The XR is
in the Scotty survey, stuff what anyone else thinks!

This survey is taken every time i walk into my garage :D

R1 not among them? It should be best sport motorcycle..alone for it's engine!
Ever heard or driven one? Best 4 cylinder!
Yer right Benny. One of the other mags picked the R1as the winner in their shootout of rockets

Yeah it isn't the fastest or the most powerful of all them...but power delivery is what makes it great...you can read it everywhere...

I did testride all the new superbikes (except Aprilia RSV4 and the new BMW) and altough I'm not used to sportbikes I felt right home on the R1...easy to control and great sound!

My XR felt like an underpowered sofa on wheels after the testride :1eye:

seriously...you're faster in second gear than the XR will ever go....and if you open the throttle to much you're doing this on one wheel :D

but it's scary...a guy like me would kill himself with such a bike :innocent:

But Benny, they dont have a soul, that's the difference, no soul....:D

I think that does not count for the new Yamaha 4-cylinder...the sound is very special and gives the bike personality, like a ducati or RSV...rode the kawasaki too and there I have to agree it's just a soul-less plastic-aluminum rocket lol...

but nothing beats the vibes you get on a harley this is true :D
