Developed an oil leak. I 'think' I traced it to the oil drain tube/hose. It's cracked, like the vent tubes off the rocker covers going to the air cleaner do. Cracked and crazed right below the oil tank. Now this is a special rubber line, starts at what looks like 1/2 inch at the tank, then after a couple of inches tapers to a 3/8. Then it goes into a plastic sleeve that kind of goes thru the engine cases, then the rubber hose sticks out and that's where the plug goes to drain your oil. Has anybody had things apart this far. Want to know if I can just take that plastic sleeve out and run a 1/2 inch rubber tube all the way down thru there. Because the 1/2 inch hose ain't gonna go thru that sleeve. And a 3/8 hose ain't gonna go on the oil tank. And the local dealer says nobody nation wide has this stock oil drain tube in stock. Not positive yet that this is the leak, but there's oil all around this line at the bottom, inside this plastic sleeve, and on that metal crossbrace on the bottom of the frame. And things seem relivtivily dry around the top of the engine cases. Has anybody else had this problem of oil leaking around this area?

First I've heard of this particular hose breaking down, but it wouldn't surprise me, if it's made of the same stuff the other hoses are made out of. Take the side cover off of the oil tank, and make sure the oil tank isn't leaking at the top seam (a known problem) and then wicking down the oil drain tube.
good luck

If that's it I think you'd be fine with a 1/2 all the way down. At the drain end just stick an appropriate sized bolt up there and secure it with a hose clamp. There's really no reason that line has to go all the way through and come out below the motor, you can hang that hose anywhere ...

Dam Magoo! I just got back from town and checking here before I start on it. Guess what parts I picked up. 1/2 in heater hose. Appropriate sized bolt, and clamps. Hey man, it's just like we're on the same wave link or something. :)

If I remember correctly, it was Jeff B that reported his drain hose rotted away and starting to leak. I recently ordered the hose from the local HD dealer and received it within 3 days and will be installing it soon. My original hose is not leaking but it feels stiff and is beginning to deteriorate from heat and exposure. I don't remember the exact cost but I don't think it was crazy expensive.

CT Rider - checked oil tank pretty good. Took cover off, removed rear fender so I could get to that side do oil tank, did not completely remove tank, but did remove mounting screws so I could move the tank around some to check it out. Does not look like its leaking.
Fd driver, thanks for that info. I might order it from there. Mean while, I installed the 1/2 hose from auto store and gonna give that a try.
Bike nut- yea, sort of. Look at that link fd driver put up. Number 18 is the hose, see the sleeve. That goes in the top of the engine cases and sticks out the bottom. Don't know exactly what it is going through however. You can look at yours and see what I mean. The hose attaches at the bottom of the oil tank, turns in, then down through that sleeve. Passes right by where the battery ground strap bolts to engine cases.
Or, you could just look at that picture Magoo just posted. Lol

Don, any other ideas on what to do? The original hose is just thin rubber. Heater hose is pretty thick and I figured it 'might' hold up better. And the original hose looks to be of very similar material as those vent hoses off the rocker boxes.
