Hello all! I left off my last thread determining I wanted to make a Free Spirits style intake of my own. I found somebody that would like to manufacture and sell a carbon fiber version of it should I be able to draft up a working version and send him the files. I did verify with Free Spirits that they have permanently ceased production, and Sandra from Free Spirits confirmed that "problems in production and the low request" led them to stop system production in 2021. So hopefully there won't be any issues with copyright infringement or anything of that nature even though it's going to be largely the same thing since they've abandoned the idea.

Anyway, I need to get this printed off to verify fitment, but before I send this off to the 3D printer I was wondering if anyone that has a Free Spirits or similar style intake, or just has experience working with the intake area of the XR see any problems in the geometries. I'm not totally comfortable in the measurements I took of the position of the top bolt of the induction cover for the support tab, or really that the design of that tab would be effective in carbon fiber. Any help or feedback is appreciated!

Fantastic, ZNQRCH. I love the drawing, obviously CAD. You look to be a capable fabber, as I surmised above. I have a Free Spirits intake and this looks identical. My only concern is the support tabs construction being in cf, and the strength of its attatchment to the intake throat. Would an alloy collar or strap be a stronger alternative than a printed tab one piece with the throat?...it is after all a high vibration area.
If you make a prototype and it works out, I think there will be a few owners here who would like to have one also. This could amortise your costs production costs considerably.
And btw; do you have a first name we could use?
Cheers,

J.

Thank you Shackman! You're far too kind in calling me a capable fabber, I'm not actually producing this myself. Seller jilatt-62 on eBay will be making the production parts, I just have the gift of having been taught CAD and liking it in high school. I agree wholeheartedly on the support's durability being brought into question though. Like I said, I don't think I even got the measurements correct on its position anyway. I think a length of rubber wrapped around the tube, a hoseclamp, and a steel tab that could hook around the clamp would be the way to mount it. Hopefully rubber could isolate some of the vibrations. I considered drafting it to mount to the two original airbox mounting holes above, which would afford the ability to make a fascia similar to what user mortbike did with 3D printed parts in this thread. I think that would overcomplicate the part, and my main goal in trying to work with jilatt-62 is to make an arguably better part than the Free Spirits intake (at least in weight savings) for a price point lower than theirs. The price point is up to him though. You can call me Ben, by the way! Instead of my gibberish username. 🤣🤣

And thanks Zaki! I'll be using this thread to post any updates with it, and eventually the link to buy the part if and when it comes to fruition!

Nice drawing! I was an old school draughtsman, you know with the pens and pencils and this is definitely a beautiful layout. I hope to see the fruits of your efforts. Good luck 🤞

Hello,
Go to the classifieds section of this forum, someone from Belgium has one of these for sale. Good luck with your project. :)

I recall seeing the mounting tabs broken on some Free Spirits units so that's something to look out for. I definitely would not attach it to the tank. The difference between the movement of the motor and that of the tank would destroy it. The rubber between the throttle body and the airbox on the XR is like a big speaker cone with lots of flex. I'd make a bracket to carry the filter off the motor also. That's just me tho.

Thank you! That means a lot coming from someone with experience hand drafting. The design looks a little strange on the front and back views because it was generated off of a 3D model I made in the CAD software I use. I could stand to work a little on my drafting skills to touch up the generated drawings I get from that program.

Noted! I remember seeing that special gasket on the throttle body when I was taking the airbox off to take measurements, but I hadn't considered any effect there might be if I had decided to mount it to the tank. I'll steer clear of that!

Are you suggesting a second tab coming from around the collar of the filter, or near that area? Do you think the large breather bolt on the front end of the induction module cover would be a good place to mount that, or did you have another idea? I'm open to all suggestions, aesthetic or functional!

Sorry for the delay. there seems to be a lot hanging out front off of that small tab. Perhaps that is the reason for the tabs breaking. Yes. That large Allen bolt holding the throttle body cover/cylinder brace seems like a good mount for a bracket to the hose clamp of the filter. 2 cents.

Yeah! I like the idea, I'll be sure to add that to the design. Thank you!
