Okay before anyone knocks it, I made absolutely no modifications whatsoever to my existing factory Rear Sets and can go back to them at any time and you would practically never know I had mids on here except for the factory frame mounts I had installed while my RSD pipe was being fabbed to fit my bike. I removed my rear sets and sent them to powdercoat so I figured now would be the best time to try this while my bike is down anyway. Also, I plan on riding from Orange County, Ca to Denver, Co in June so I thought I would compare the comfort/ride. Automotive tire Automotive lighting Motor vehicle Automotive exhaust Hood

I started with a set of 2004-2013 XL mid controls with no longer available vented brake pedal & shifter lever that i sent out for powdercoat as well as a pair of Joker Machine footpegs. Automotive tire Hood Automotive lighting Vehicle Grille

I used a 2003 sportster forward control shifter lever for my rear brake pivot. The shaft diameter is exactly the same as the XR. The depth of the XL shifter lever was nearly twice that of the XR brake pedal, I had to cut/shave/tap and massage this lever into what it is now. I used a 2004-up XL mid control peg shaft that I cut the excess off and welded a riser washer on the end then finished it off with a decorative RSD button. adjustable at both ends to get my pedal height set just where I want it.

This little project took me most of the day yesterday and half day today but a lot of that was just tring to figure out the right side--of course the left side was a piece of cake. Granted, this won't work for everyone due to exhaust, etc and many wouldn't want the mids in the first place but now I think I have the best of both worlds since I can go back to my rear sets at any time. Cheers!

Hey man, we don't judge here. Whatever fits you and makes you comfortable and happy riding the bike then have at it. Looks good. Only if you put apes on it then you could expect a fair to middling amount of grief from a bunch of guys here.

LOL Right on!
What are the mids like? Are you a shortarse like me 5ft7inch?...........I wouldnt have dreamt up doing that but why not, best of both worlds ,that would free up quite a few different exhausts people have been looking at.Your a breath of fresh air on any site mate!!

I guess I would be considered average height at 5'10". I took my bike for a decent ride last night around town and man what a difference. The comfort is night and day! The riding stance with the mid controls actually makes my seating position more comfortable, I'm sitting against the rear of the seat which now feels like a good lumbar support. I no longer feel like my arms are heavy on the handlebars or leaning on them. I used to find myself sometimes missing the tiny rear brake pedal and now it feels like the rear brake works even better although I'm sure it just works the same as before. Even at stoplights I would constantly have my legs resting/hitting the footpegs on the rear but that is gone. I found my way here to the XR from a 2007 Sporty Roadster so I'm quite partial to the feel of the mid controls but I absolutely love the XR! Nice job!! you have to make the bike fit you and comfortable to ride. Other wise it will just collect dust in the garage.
Sir I just got my 2009 XR last week. Ive owned crotch rockets/softails and RK classic. This is my first sportster and at 5'7, I am a bit uncomfortable with the way the footrest is located. So I have been considering your mid control mods. Which part again are direct bolt on and which part did you modify/ weld. Thanks in advance!!BTW I STILL HAVE STOCK EXHAUST
Not a mod for me, but nice work.

Very nice looking professional mod.
Lol .... I guess we're even .... I took my 2004 Roadster, removed the mid-controls and put rear-sets on it ..... wish you had been around then, we could have just traded footpegs .... :nana:
Hey man, we don't judge here.
Well of course we do! But it's mostly in good fun ;)

I used 2004-2013 Factory H-D mid controls--no modifications to the left side but there are several modifications to the right side. You have to find a good welder/fabricator in your area(unless you possess those skills) to make some metal stand-off blocks to weld to your frame to replicate the mid controls mounts on a 2004-2017 sportster XL model, the XR frame was not made with these. I was fortunate enough to have a 2007 XL1200R so I rode it over to the shop so my fabricator could take a look and make measurements in order to get the controls mounted correctly. Here's som stock XL mid mounts: Tire Automotive tire Automotive design Motor vehicle Automotive exterior

Stock exhaust may not have enough room to get the mid controls up through the right side.
Thanks a bunch! Decisions decisions. Lol
