Yes, my first ride on the XR will happen today, since I purchased it back in late March. I have a Dyno scheduled to repace the old FuelPak and tune it for "rideability" with the new Power Vision. RC Cycles in Hayward is the place.
Home RC Cycles Hayward, CA (510) 471-9755
Engine-related additions, are a drop-in K&N, new SE Plugs and Wires, and Bassani Roadrage 2-1 Exhaust. Everything else is stock. I'll report back with the print-out, and after ride report, once I stop smiling!!!

So, why have I waited so long to ride? Back when I saw my first pictures and racing of the AMA XR Series, I wanted one. I initially wanted a Buell XB12, but due to the parts issues, I swayed to the XR. Had been looking for an XR for a long time, and just missed out on buying a street-converted ex-race bike. Found another low-mileage 09 Vivid Black, and it already had a few mods on it. It was well within my price range, and talked to my wife about it. I have had an old truck that I've been talking about selling for years. I threw in the following, "If I buy this XR, I will not ride it till I sell the truck." This was my words, not hers telling me to sell the truck. I like my marriage, and want to keep it that way, so we agreed. So many calls, very few lookers.

But wait? You are thinking I sold the truck, and now I can ride the XR? Nope! I have a "Hall Pass" for this week to ride it before going to the Bagger Races at Sonoma Raceway (Sears Point) with @amarzano and @ranbush this coming Sunday, and I'm getting use to it before the 160 mile round trip. I have never ridden this until today. Not even sneeking a ride down the street. Started it many times, letting it warm up, made vroom-vroom sounds, changed quite a few things, have a few more to change later on, but kept my promise, and have not ridden it, nor have let anyone else ride it.

Full report with pictures, later today, and yes, I'll be careful!

I hope you don't need one but if you get desperate there are a few used ones available

Yep, the cranks are obsolete, so it will be sent out for repair and all the work. Going to start this in January, due to $$.

I feel like Gus Grissom in the movie The Right Stuff, I “screwed the pooch” performing the Scotty Mod. I hope someone can learn from my errors and not follow in my footsteps.
Hammer does a lot of work with the XR/Buell crank.
Also they do have several options for head work.
Might be worth a phone call, sometime you can be suprised by just talking to someone.
Darkhorse Crankworks is the place, for crank repair and upgrade.

The Techs recommend Dark Horse as well. It shall be done. No big bore, just stock cams, freshened bores (or new stock pistons, rings and cylinders). Maybe new oil pumps. Looking at headwork for better flow.

There is an interesting read about our crank on the Hammer site featuring the difference between us and a standard Sportster. We got the good stuff. Even THEY use Darkhorse!

Just received more bad news this morning. Andrew from Dark Horse, replied to my email inquiry, and the crank splines are not repairable. As I go deeper into this, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and it is not a train headed my way either. Dark Horse has a good half of the crank they can sell me and hold onto it till I send them my full crank. They will then do the complete work. I have seen used complete cranks on eBay for $850.00 plus shipping. The last price I saw for a new crank from H-D was around $700.00 but like I stated they have been discontinued. I don't know what the price of their 1/2 crank is yet, but it can’t be anywhere near that used one.

More info as it arrives.

Tough break Corey. Would it be a proposition to look around (eg. eBay) for a complete XR motor in good nick from a wreck and transplant that crank in? You'd then have a virtually complete set of motor and gearbox related spares for any future issues that might crop up.

J.
That thought has crossed my mind, but I do believe I’ll stick with my current plan. Thanks!

Wow Corey sorry to hear that. Thanks for sharing your experience. I know how you feel about your XR.
I haven't been on this site much over the past couple years, only off & on briefly. Anyway, sorry to hear about the XR Corey, that SUCKS! Hard to believe that the splines aren't repairable, but I guess they know better. The 1275 kit WILL happen to mine someday! Between my mechanic buddy who cut his teeth on hot-rodding Sporties, Yellowstone H-D who dyno-tunes mine & races the Hooligan circuit, AND Hammer, I'll be hoping for one of those engines approaching 120hp! That may be a bit optimistic, but I feel like that'll be achievable with those people involved. Hope all turns out for the best on your rebuild!

No issues with the engine since the last posting, and have been daily commuting on it. I am off to BRG Motorsports later this morning, to have the tune completed. Will be waiting there while it gets finished. As promised, I will have print-outs of both Factory Pro and a translation to Dynojet when complete.

The Dyno is only 40 miles from home. Oh how I love this bike!!! The ride of a naked sportbike and the thump of the H-D.

I've never seen anybody sniff at an exhaust bung. Usually they'll just plug in a wideband O2 sensor. I guess it shoukd work.

Ed: Oh wait. It's a Factory Pro dyno? Are they doing a 4-gas tune?

Did they read your front cylinder?
Just the rear O2, and out the lower of the two outlets. Yes Factory Pro. Long story, I will not be going back to BRG and not referring anyone to them either. Tomorrow morning I will elaborate on my decision.

so disappointing..
Well, tomorrow morning has arrived, and as promised, here is what happened yesterday.

The visit was to finish the upper end of the tuning, that wasn't complete the last time.

1. I go into talk to KC(the owner),and he asks what we are doing today. I know he works with a bunch of customers, so I let that slide a remind him what we are talking about last Friday. Finishing the Dyno we started in the end ov November. He days OK.

2. He asks if I am leaving it to do this work. I remind him I am waiting as we talked about last week.

3. He then replies that he needs to call Mike, the Dyno Guy, and see if he is coming in. OK a little worried here that the guy is not here and no telling when he will be here, but I am waiting just the same. He should already know I was coming in right? Only one guy does the dynos.

4. Took 15 minutes for the guy at the counter to print something for me to sign. He presses one key, looks up at the screen, types another, and looks up again. I have heard “Slow and steady wins the race” but you gotta be a little faster to get out of the gate!

The Dyno guy shows up after an hour, and asks me what are we doing? I tell him, and he asks if KC knows about this. I tell him KC and I have talked about this for a few weeks.

A couple hours into the testing I get called in to KC’s office and he is showing me what the Dyno is looking like. No power near what is was last time. They are saying either something is wrong with their main tuning system, or something is going wrong with bike. I get asked what I changes on the bike? Nothing changed other than cleaning the inner threads and tightening the crank bolt. Everything else is the same. Riding it for months, and no issues. The Dyno guy tells me that it’s not the bike, but with all of the power outages they have had recently, it could be something with the Dyno system. I questioned him, did you test this out on a bike that you know was good before, and see if you have the same numbers. He said he did his bike and it wasn’t the same. OMG then why am I here if they are not sure if their system is working correctly. This all doesn’t make sense.

Oh and the bike runs fine. I really wanted to get a full pull to compare it with the last time. 40 miles registered on the dyno.

Hard to recommend this place to others when the first, second, and third impressions are so bad. I always give a place a second chance, and just can’t with this place after two visits.

All of this was going through my head on the 40 mile ride home.

Rant off.
