XR1200 Glide? Nope. I'd stay with the single headlight.

We have had a few members who have done that to their bikes, I was never a fan…I thought that the single headlight was best. But for those that ride a lot at night (I don’t), it might be ok.

Yes I rather like the single design overall, so much so that I don't want to put a modern looking LED assy on there for more light output (but I DO want more light output). So was just playing around with ideas. It got me thinking, if this was a factory option of say $200 when new, I wonder if more would have been build as singles or duals. I think the frontal design and rake of the XR is substantial enough to wear the dual's even better than the Triumph.

If it looked more like a Buell setup with smaller headlights and a small wind cheater, maybe.
On a second note, Buell headlights were not great.
True, I played around with those too but it just appeared 'aftermarket' to my eye. Something like the Fat Bob FXDF is just a totally different aesthetic also, much too Fonzy for the XR. The idea was to get my hands on a set of Street Triple / Speed Triple / Speed Four housings and use the stock HD 5.75 Halogen inserts, for a somewhat OE looking appearance. Of course it may end up just looking like shit too. Open to that :ROFLMAO:

Legend, thanks! I had seen the Buell setup but not the Fat Bob, very interesting!

Ah yes, the opening photos from Cycle World article on the XR1200 that sparked my interest in the bike. Only took an extra 11 years to buy one!

I think the single headlight is more in keeping with the "XR(750) with lights" concept that the designers were after. But the output from the stock headlight was so bad I replaced it with an LED. I've seen others have put auxiliary lights on their XRs for more wattage.

:p:p

Absolutely. The LED is the smart choice... but I'm a slow learner :p

I guess I hold two different opinions about the design at the same time, which seems to be rare in Harley Davidson circles. lol.

In comparing the design of the headlamp and headlamp mounting system to many other bikes, the XR setup is pretty slick imo and ultra heavy duty. The mounting pin location for the bucket is cast into the upper triple clamp and the whole setup is intentionally discrete, i.e. it has to run a headlight, but lets keep it as flush as possible, except for just the retaining ring and convex lens.

As an overall design though, on some angles it tends to make the motorcycle look like the headlight is too small (or missing if a black LED is fitted!) - which as mentioned I know is intentional and part of it's legend for those in the know, but in other ways it gives the bike an odd looking proportion on some angles where it's a cruiser looking motorcycle from the front (to the uninitiated) and a naked bike for the rest, with it's plastic panels and sexy shape.

The Speed Triple and related models have a mounting system that would tie-in nicely with the stock XR center mount. The lights are independent but tied together and then clamped in the middle.

For it to work, would have to machine up an adapter with a 'cap' / clamp system similar to the below, but it would be quite short and bolted to the stock XR upper triple clamp headlight mounting hole.

Thanks for the thoughts Gents and sorry for the lack of Harley Davidson purity in my thinking at times!

I am kind of an OEM purist, but I dig it! Gotta admit, I'm not a big fan of the looks of our bikes from certain angles. Front 3/4 view being one of them. I think the recessed single small headlight is just a strange look. I think its exacerbated by the blacked out daymaker I have. Chrome or the OEM headlight looks more fitting and balanced to me.

I dig the dual headlight look. I've also wondered what a FXDR headlight and cowl would look like.

Thanks for the input and your thoughts!

I have now tracked down a Speed Triple front end assy and another HD reflector assy. Soon I will start physically adapting the assy as a mockup in wood. The full assy will be Speed Triple buckets, center tie bar and 2 x stock HD headlight reflectors. Once I am happy with the dimensions and placement, a friend of mine will finalize the design in CAD and will CNC machine the part in aluminum.
