Finally Bought My Dream Bike - Phoenix, AZ

Hi everyone,

My name's Hunter and I live in Phoenix, AZ, USA. I've dreamed of owning an XR ever since seeing them hit the dealers in 09-10. That dream has finally come true!

Little background - I come from a motorcycle family and started racing motocross at 5 years old. When I got into high school (age 15) I bought my first Harley (XL883). At the time (09-10) my mom was buying a new Forty Eight (XL1200X) and I stopped by the dealer when she was picking it up. I thought her bobber was cool, but not nearly as cool as the XR sitting across the showroom. From that day on I knew I needed an XR someday. Fast forward 13 years and here we are...

Last fall I got the itch to look and by pure luck stumbled on a "barn find" in Redding, CA. It was a 2009 in mirage orange, original owner, and 194 ORIGINAL miles. Brand new... How? After talking with the seller I learned he bought two back in the day. Parked one and rode the sh*t out of the other one. The story checked out so I road tripped to Redding and picked it up. Today it has about 500 miles on the clock. Does this qualify as a collector? There's a big part of me that wants to keep it as a living room piece (as much of a crime as that is)...

Anyway - I did a few clean up modifications and am really happy with how it's looking. Storz rear license plate, bar end mirrors, signal delete, and Two Bros Comp S exhaust. The exhaust was a trick - had to shorten it up and make a new bracket, but I made it work. There just wasn't anything on the market nowadays that I thought looked/sounded as good as Two Bros. Let me know what you guys think. If anyone wants the Bassani that came on it let me know!

Look forward to more mods in the near future. I'd like to put a Storz shifter kit, Ohlins suspension, and a Baja Designs LP6 headlight. A lot of dyna guys are running Baja lights and I think it'd be sweet to have one on the XR. Just looking to do tasteful "modern" mods that are out there today. We'll see how it goes.

Here's a couple photos of what it looked like in the fall and current set up with the Two Bros installed.

Look forward to chatting/riding with y'all. Anyone in Phoenix let me know!

Welcome to The Forum Hunter! Looks like you scored big time with that find. I like the looks of the new exhaust, but the front cylinder down pipe hangs pretty low, it might scrape in right hand turns. Even more so if you decide to go with longer rear shocks. I would keep the Bassani in the garage for a bit, until you are satisfied with the Two Bros.

Outstanding find! Welcome in from Melbourne, Australia. Just take it easy if that's the original Dunlop Qualifier rubber from 2009 you have there. Be a shame to put such an original specimen at risk from aged tires...

Welcome from Connecticut, looks to be a very nice low mileage example of the species.
As Our esteemed member from down under alluded, if those tires are original, it might be wise to have them changed For fresh rubber. In my opinion, the best money you can spend on your XR, would be to upgrade the suspension, made a night and day difference in the way my bike handled.
Hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine.
Regards
Roy
Welcome from Canada.

Welcome Hunter. I can tell from what you’ve already done that there is no way that beauty is going in your living room. HAHAHA! Congratulations on your XR starter kit.

Welcome from California. All has been said above, but enjoy the looks and questions you’ll get wherever you ride. Make sure to change all fluids, brake included. Those tires might have original H-D Air in them!

Hunter, I feel it is my duty as a dude to share this thread with you. I’ve seen at least 3 other XRs that would have benefited from license plate tethers. There is a lot of vibration through the subframe.

I'm directly jealous! Both exhaust systems are not approved in Germany.

Thanks everyone! I forgot to mention new tires were technically the first “mod” I did once I got it home. Didn’t want to chance 13 year old tires and went with new Sportmax IVs and it rides nice. Good heads up on brake fluid… will swap out soon! - HP
Welcome to the group. I'm also from Phx. I might be interested in the Bassani.
Welcome from SW Michigan! Beautiful example of a clean XR! Great find!
