Ok, for years there have been wars and rumors of wars over a North America XR meeting. East meets West. North meets South. Good meets Evil. Yin meets Yang. You get the picture.

Well, nothing happens until something happens, dig? So this is where it starts ... I expect it to evolve quite a bit before we nail down real specifics (routes, motels, activities, marijuana vendors, casinos, you know...the basics. :) )

Consensus seems to be Colorado (I'm sure legal pot had nothing to do with that decision )(). There was some talk of South Dakota but I think the mountain roads drew it back to Colorado. Where at in Colorado is yet to be determined. Hopefully someone has some experience driven insight to choosing a place.

There's a very cool website we may find helpful : http://www.motorcyclecolorado.com/index.html

Again this fire may or may not catch ..... But this thread is how we'll find out :yinyang:

cripple creek is near Pikes Peak :)

The real question is do we as a groupe want to think about Maybe putting on some kind of enduro type tires for this ride. Whole lot of less than paved roads would be inaccessible to the planning.

Wasn't this the rage a few years ago.. the west coast boys didn't want to ride to the east side of the mountains, and the east coast boys didn't want to ride on the west side of the mountains? Then you all agreed to meet in Sante Fe and smoke some peyote?

Desmo Steve and I have been working on riding as many paved Colorado passes as we can. (There's a map with pushpins hanging in the Mouse and Toad Garage...) I'm not sure we've marked everything we've ridden, and there are a lot of good roads that don't go across the continental divide.

Bear has made the point the tenative dates are too close to the Sturgis (Aug 8-14)....... So if anyone has suggestions this would be the time ..... Keep in mind the window for riding up there is pretty small...... Late May until early September is prolly safe

lakota is liable to ride anywhere!!!!! He's the original wild man.

The only reason I was suggesting Pikes Peak is, just like you yourself said, for those that have never ridden the road they might like to do it too. I been up it 4 or 5 times I guess including when the top was still gravel. Doesnt matter to me, I would just like to meet some of the left coast guys to pick on them a little. :innocent:

Sounds like fun! Lets all agree on dates sooner than later. Don't know about you guys, but I like to book hotels way in advance.

I will be in. Just doing my part to foster favorable East-West relations.

Ah, I have been to the Colorado Rockies at least 5 times. 3 times in late summer or fall when the aspen's leaves are turning. It is a beautiful sight.

I think the August 18-21 dates are fine. Just don't change them to conflict with the Indy MotoGP...

Canyon City is also a nice area to work out of (although I prefer Avon, Leadville, or something a bit farther north.) There's a KOA with reasonably priced cabins just west of town, on Hwy 50. It's a beautiful ride through the canyon, up to Salida and then on over Monarch Pass. CO 114 branches off US 50 east of Gunnison and runs east to US 285 and back north to Salida. It's an incredible little stretch of road.

I think it sounds like a good idea, I'm heading to Cortez Co. for the Kawasaki Concours Owner's Group National Rally 6/15 threw 6/20. I will give a summation of what of what i see and like when i get back if anyone is interested. I don't know much about Co. but i'm about to find out.

Yo Dog, have you picked your route this year. gimme a holler if your coming out this way. Don't think we are going up this year. supposed to be a sold out show.

If I can go and that is a big IF, I think I will bring both XR's. The XR1200 and the XR650L. Can not just ride pavement while I am there. :whistling:

There are so many miles of pavement, you probably won't make it back to your truck for 4 days to make a swap out. If I were to make a recommendation... I would wear a leather jacket, some kevlar pants, and stuff the wallet with Benjamins. And not set up a base camp.

#38 ·
If you can deal with no running water... On a good note: we did dig a new outhouse about 7 years ago :whistling:

Having the same base camp every night reduces the complexity quite a bit. Just in terms of packing each morn and carrying all your gear while you are riding ...
